3DWorld Review Test Image
This image was made entirely in Carrara Studio 2.1 in response
to a review in 3DWorld Magazine issue 38.
All the models were made in the Vertex Modeller
although it would probably have been easier to do the cup and saucer in the Spline Modeller. I wanted to show
that Carrara does have a standard Lathe tool. The cup and saucer are lathed profiles. The cup handle and
orange use subdivision surfaces. The spoon was built from scratch polygon by polygon but I probably should
have lofted it or used Amapi. The objects were positioned using
collision detection to get the surfaces to mate properly. Images were used as texture maps for the
environment, the table and the napkin but the rest of the textures were procedural. The fresnel effects on the
cup and saucer use the ZMorphics ZTools (Previously the Power
Pack EX by Lost Horizon Software) Fresnel plug-in to get the fresnel reflection, transparency and refraction
effects on the glass cup and saucer. The render utilized a single spot light with soft shadows and global
illumination with environmental lighting.
I decided to do my own take on the image rather
than an exact duplicate. Patrick Tuten did a
very nice
image as well.
