I produced
Masks for a specific call from On
Spec, the Canadian magazine of Speculative Fiction, for computer
artists. I had produced very little computer art before (since my tools
were poor and I could get much better results with traditional materials)
but was eager to try. The illustration started as a line drawing scanned
at low resolution (the best that I could manage at the time) which was
then "coloured" in grey with the Neopaint graphics software.
I have long
had an interest in Native Indian design, and robots and thought it would
be interesting to meld the two. Of course, the title is "Masks" because
there are two masks in the picture -- one the robot holds, the other
the robot wears. This piece led to me getting the assignment to illustrate
The Monk.
